may find it surprising that the use of leather connected way back to the
development of one of the first-ever stone made tools, approx. two million
years ago.

The beginning of the use of leather
Some of our
pre-historic ancestors, who were known as the early hominoids, had started
developing the tools which were made from stone more than 2.5 million years ago,
which is also considered to be the beginning of the Stone Age period. These
effective, yet simple tools would enable our ancestors to hunt down animals,
such as mammoths with thick hides by piercing through them for their meat to
survive. This hunting down of animals with thick skins allowed our ancestors to
use their hides to craft some of the earliest types of leather millions of
years ago.
Towards the later part of history, around the time that the Neanderthals had migrated into the modern arts of Europe thousands of years later, the pre-historic evidence suggests that they had already started using various leather tanning methods such as salting and smoking.
The use of leather in ancient civilizations
At some
point, around thirty thousand to forty thousand years ago, human beings had
perfected the entire tanning process. We were able to craft durable and
high-quality footwear which allowed us to walk for miles together and cover
more ground and ultimately put a lot less strain on our feet.
The tanneries
began to grow in large numbers around twelve-thousand years ago in the ancient
Egyptian civilization. This was when the process of trading wholesale
winter gloves began. As these early civilizations grew in number, they
started to implement leather in their shields to the basic armor that they
wore, many of their first weapons had leather used in them.
The effects of the Industrial Revolution on
the leather industry
During the latter
half of the 18th century, there was the industrial revolution - the advent of
the latest high-powered machines that mass-produced products. It not only
transformed the leather manufacturing industry radically, but it also
transformed the entire world itself. Huge leather tanneries and companies began
to sell wholesale gloves bulk. As there was a stronger shift towards
globalization in the years that followed the unfortunate events of World War
two, the demand for leather goods began to skyrocket.
For more than two million years, leather has been playing a vital role in humanity’s evolution. From one of the simplest skins to the most valuable historical artifacts, the production and manufacturing leathers have grown and evolved just as we have. We owe thanks to the innovative human minds that were working behind to make human society a better place than it was before.
